Stacked stones next to a human spine model

Scoliosis can affect more than the appearance of the spine. You might first notice one shoulder sitting higher than the other, a change in posture or clothing hanging a little differently. For parents, noticing these changes in a growing child or teen can naturally bring up questions about what they mean and what to do next.

A Sideways Curve That Can Look Different for Everyone

Scoliosis involves an abnormal sideways curvature and rotation of the spine. It often develops during childhood or adolescence, although it can be identified at other stages of life.

In many cases, the cause isn’t known. This is referred to as idiopathic scoliosis. Other forms may be associated with congenital or neuromuscular conditions.

Why Some Curves Need Closer Monitoring

Several factors may be considered when evaluating scoliosis and the likelihood of a curve changing over time, including:

  • Age and stage of growth
  • The degree and location of the curve
  • How much growth remains
  • Family history
  • Underlying health or neuromuscular conditions

These factors are among the reasons assessment and appropriate monitoring can be particularly relevant for children and teens who are still growing.

The Signs You May Notice First

Scoliosis doesn’t always cause pain, especially in its earlier stages. Instead, you may notice uneven shoulders, one hip sitting higher than the other, an uneven waist or clothing that doesn’t seem to hang quite right.

Some people may also experience back discomfort, muscle fatigue or changes in how they move.

If you’ve noticed a change in your child’s posture or a curve has already been identified, an assessment can help determine what may be appropriate next, including whether further medical evaluation or monitoring is indicated.

Taking a Closer Look at Movement and Function

At North Kildonan Family Chiropractic Centre, Dr. Brett Carter looks at more than the appearance of the curve. His assessment may include posture, spinal movement and function, relevant health history, and how scoliosis is affecting everyday activities.

He takes time to understand each patient’s needs and goals and explain the findings clearly. When chiropractic care is considered suitable, recommendations are tailored to the individual rather than following the same approach for everyone.

The goals may include addressing related musculoskeletal discomfort and maintaining comfortable movement and function. Reassessment can be used to monitor symptoms and function over time. Chiropractic care doesn’t replace medical monitoring or other management when these are indicated.

Wondering About a Change in the Spine?

Noticing uneven shoulders, hips or posture can leave you wondering what comes next. North Kildonan Family Chiropractic Centre can evaluate spinal movement and function and discuss whether chiropractic care may have a role in your or your child’s overall management.
