Slipped Disc Treatment in Winnipeg

A disc problem can make even the most ordinary things difficult. Bending to tie your shoes, lifting a grocery bag or sitting through a meeting may suddenly require much more thought than they used to. Sometimes discomfort stays around the back or neck. Other times, symptoms may travel into an arm or leg.
Slipped Disc vs. Herniated Disc: What’s Happening?
Despite the familiar term “slipped disc,” spinal discs don’t actually slip out of place. A herniated disc occurs when material from inside the disc pushes through or into its outer layers. A bulging disc is different, although the terms are sometimes used interchangeably in everyday conversation.
Disc changes don’t always cause symptoms. When they do, nearby nerve tissue may become irritated or compressed, potentially contributing to radiating pain, numbness, tingling or weakness.
What Can Affect Your Spinal Discs?
A number of factors may be associated with disc problems, including:
- Repetitive lifting, bending or twisting
- Physical demands at work or during sport
- Age-related changes in the discs
- Other individual health and lifestyle factors
- Falls or other injuries
- Prolonged sitting
Sometimes symptoms appear after one particular movement. In other cases, there isn’t an obvious moment when the problem began.
When Pain Travels Beyond Your Back
A disc-related problem in the lower back may be associated with symptoms extending into the buttock or leg. When the neck is involved, symptoms may travel into an arm or hand.
Numbness, tingling or weakness may occur as well. Persistent or worsening neurological symptoms warrant assessment, and some findings may require referral for further medical evaluation.
Finding Out What’s Behind Your Symptoms
At North Kildonan Family Chiropractic Centre, we look beyond the location of your pain to better understand how your spine and surrounding joints are moving and functioning. Dr. Brett Carter begins by listening to what’s been happening, reviewing your health history and performing an examination.
Because no two patients or disc-related problems are exactly alike, our chiropractor bases his recommendations on your individual findings, symptoms and goals. If chiropractic care is considered suitable, your plan may focus on spinal movement and function and managing related musculoskeletal symptoms. Home care recommendations may also be provided based on your assessment.
Getting Back to Everyday Movement
Your goals might be as simple as sitting more comfortably at work, bending down without being quite so guarded or getting back to activities you’ve been avoiding.
Progress is monitored over time, and recommendations can be adjusted based on how you’re responding. If further investigation or another type of care is indicated, referral may be recommended.
